INTRO: We are looking for a female support worker to assist a woman in her mid-forties, with a long-standing traumatic brain injury. She lives with her family in a private home. We want you to work Fridays, and to provide relief support at other times when someone is sick or on holiday. Mum is looking for someone who has a quiet demeanour, who can provide thoughtful, confident, and empathetic care, who is mature, nurturing, practically minded, adaptable, and caring. We train, so experience is not necessary, though aptitude is. It would be great if you have personal experience of disability.
DUTIES AND ABILITIES; The client uses a power chair for mobility and self-transfers. You will need to be kind, self-motivated, patient, caring, observant, and willing to learn how to meet her needs. You will learn about aphasia, how to ask open-ended questions and how communication difficulties are not an indicator of lack of intelligence or ability. You will need to learn to read and interpret subtle body language. You need to know how to do housework, cooking, baking, laundry to a high standard maintaining a clean well-run household.
TEAM WORK; You need to be able to work in a private home, providing care consistent with the team approach, bringing issues and solutions back for discussion and decision before implementation. You must be able to maintain confidentiality about the client, her family, and her home. It would be good if you are imaginative, good-humoured, casually well-presented, and have an engaging manner. Our goal is to have a supportive, caring place for all, including the client, enhancing our quality of life. LGBTQIA+ would fit right in. A good sense of humour is pretty essential as is embracing diversity. This is sometimes a sole-charge role so you will need to be a reliable, trustworthy, and sensible person. SHIFTS: Initially one day a week, Friday 9.30 am-5 pm (or earlier if you have children). After initial training, there is a possibility of another day shift. Ongoing flexibility to cover other shifts, day or night, when other workers are sick or on holiday would be good.
RELIEF CARE; It is anticipated that work hours will increase when other workers are on holiday. It would be great if you were able to work public holidays for at least part of the day.
TRAINING: Two weeks of paid training working alongside current workers and family and thereafter offer 24/7 support. DAILY TASKS: Good communication with the client, other workers, and her family. Identifying, assessing the daily needs of the client, and agreeing with her and family on a flexible day plan. Supporting the client with her physical, emotional, or health-related needs. Assisting with personal care, housework, and meal preparation. Assisting with connection to the community, rehabilitation exercises, walking, swimming, and medication checking. Attending work, shopping, and appointments with the client. You need to be prepared to do whatever it takes - cleaning, cooking, gardening, or helping with everyday household tasks. The ideal candidate will have enthusiasm for enabling the client to lead a stimulating enriched life. You need to be warm-hearted and have a positive attitude towards effectively maximising the client's independence. It would help if you had a natural ability to build relationships easily and fit right in whilst respecting family dynamics and boundaries. If you are down to earth, and have a good sense of humour, integrity, honesty, reliability, and flexibility you might fit right in.
